Every city has attractions.

New York has icons.

And then there’s the Intrepid Museum—a place that is far more than either.

Permanently moored along Manhattan’s west side, the USS Intrepid isn’t simply a retired aircraft carrier. She’s a living chapter of American history. Commissioned in 1943 during World War II, Intrepid survived five kamikaze attacks, a torpedo strike, served in Vietnam, recovered astronauts returning from the Mercury and Gemini space missions, and spent more than three decades protecting freedom before becoming one of America’s premier military museums.

You don’t merely tour Intrepid.

You board her.

The experience begins the moment you step onto the massive flight deck, where more than two dozen historic aircraft stand against the backdrop of one of the world’s great skylines. Fighter jets from nearly every era of modern aviation line the deck, while the Hudson River and Midtown Manhattan create one of the most spectacular settings of any museum anywhere.

Be sure to set aside plenty of time.

Descending into the ship reveals what life aboard an aircraft carrier was actually like. Crew quarters, the galley, command spaces, engineering compartments, and interactive exhibits paint a vivid picture of the thousands of sailors who once called this floating city home.

Then there are the museum’s true headliners.

The Space Shuttle Enterprise, the prototype orbiter that paved the way for America’s shuttle program, occupies its own stunning pavilion overlooking the river. Standing beneath it offers an entirely new appreciation for the ambition of the American space program.

Just steps away sits the guided missile submarine USS Growler, one of the only Cold War-era submarines in the United States open to the public. Walking through its impossibly narrow passageways provides an unforgettable glimpse into life beneath the sea.

Visitors can even step inside the sleek British Airways Concorde, once the fastest passenger aircraft ever to cross the Atlantic. In just over three hours, Concorde routinely connected New York and London, forever changing the possibilities of air travel.

The Intrepid also finds itself at the center of one of America’s most meaningful celebrations. During the nation’s 250th anniversary festivities, New York Harbor becomes the stage for Sail4th 250, with hundreds of majestic tall ships sailing past the carrier in a once-in-a-generation tribute to America’s maritime heritage. Few places offer a better vantage point to reflect on the country’s remarkable journey from 1776 to today.

History feels different when you can touch it.

On Intrepid, you can.

And as you leave the flight deck with Manhattan rising behind you and Lady Liberty standing watch farther down the harbor, you’ll understand why this isn’t simply one of New York City’s finest museums.

It’s one of America’s.
