Former Private Prison Executive Named Acting ICE Head

The Trump administration has named David Venturella as the next acting head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, replacing current acting director Todd Lyons at the end of the month. Venturella previously worked as an executive with GEO Group, one of the nation’s largest private prison and immigration detention companies. Before returning to ICE, he served in leadership roles overseeing detention contracts and corporate development. The leadership change comes as the Trump administration continues expanding immigration detention operations and pushing forward with its mass deportation agenda. ICE has played a central role in those efforts, ramping up arrests, detention capacity, and enforcement operations nationwide. Venturella’s appointment is already drawing scrutiny from immigration advocates and critics who point to his ties to the private prison industry. Supporters of the move say his long experience inside ICE and the detention system makes him qualified to lead the agency during a period of major expansion.

Trump admin to pause new Medicare hospice enrollments

The Trump administration is temporarily blocking new home health and hospice providers from enrolling in Medicare as part of a broader effort to crack down on healthcare fraud. Officials say the pause will give the federal government time to review billions of dollars in Medicare spending and strengthen oversight rules for providers entering the system. The move is tied to Vice President JD Vance’s anti-fraud task force, which argues fraudulent operators have been able to quickly establish businesses and bill the Medicare program under current regulations. The administration says the temporary freeze is intended to prevent abuse while federal agencies develop additional safeguards and guidance for hospice and home healthcare providers.

Trump arrives in Beijing for high-stakes summit with Xi

President Donald Trump has arrived in Beijing for a closely watched summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping as tensions over trade, inflation, and global conflicts continue to weigh on relations between the world’s two largest economies. Trade is expected to dominate discussions during the meeting, with the White House pushing for the creation of a new “Board of Trade” aimed at easing tensions and preventing additional trade disputes between the United States and China. The proposed framework would focus on increasing trade in non-sensitive goods while maintaining restrictions and export controls on technologies tied to national security concerns. The summit comes at a politically challenging moment for Trump, who is facing mounting pressure over the ongoing Iran war and rising inflation at home. The president has also indicated he plans to discuss Taiwan and a proposed multi-billion-dollar weapons package during the visit. Trump spoke with reporters ahead of the meeting and expressed optimism about the future of U.S.-China relations.

Pentagon: War in Iran has cost $29 billion so far

WASHINGTON, May 12 (Reuters) - The United States' war in Iran has ?cost $29 billion so far, a senior Pentagon official said on Tuesday, an increase of $4 billion from an estimate provided late last month. With just six months before midterm elections in which President Donald Trump's Republicans may face an uphill battle to keep their House majority, Democrats are riding high in public opinion polls as they attempt to link the war with cost of living issues. On April 29, the Pentagon said the war at that point had cost $25 billion. Jules Hurst, who is performing the duties of the ?comptroller, told lawmakers on Tuesday that the new cost included updated repair and replacement of equipment and operational costs. "The joint staff team and the comptroller team are constantly looking at that estimate," Hurst said. He was speaking alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine. It is unclear how the Pentagon arrived at the $29 billion figure. A source told Reuters in March that Trump's administration estimated the first six days of the war had cost at ?least $11.3 billion.

Trump Promises U.S.-Cuba Talks Without Details

WASHINGTON, May 12 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Tuesday Cuba is asking for help and "we are going to talk," without providing any more information about U.S. plans. Trump has heaped pressure on the Caribbean island nation since returning to office last year, and threatened that Cuba "is next" after U.S. forces captured Nicolas Maduro, the president of longtime Cuban ally Venezuela, in January. "No Republican has ever spoken to me about Cuba, which is a failed country and only heading in one direction - down! Cuba is asking for help, and we are going to talk!!! In the meantime, I'm off to China!" Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform. Trump declined to give further information when speaking to reporters at the White House as he departed on a trip to China. "Cuba is not doing well. It's a failed nation, and we'll be talking about Cuba at the right time," Trump said. Trump has imposed fresh financial sanctions on Cuba and expanded others. His administration also has imposed a fuel blockade, curtailed U.S. travel and remittances to Cuba and sought to dissuade regional allies from contracting Cuban doctors. Asked about planned talks, a White House official gave no details beyond Trump's comments but said: "Within a short period of time they will fall, and we will be there to help them out." Representatives for the U.S. State Department and the Cuban government also did not respond. Trump is traveling to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. China has called on the United States to immediately end its embargo and sanctions on Cuba. Trump told reporters at the White House that he expects to have a good meeting with Xi.
