Pilot Killed in Colorado Firefighting Helicopter Crash

A pilot helping battle a wildfire in Colorado was killed after his firefighting helicopter crashed into a reservoir while supporting crews on the Gold Mountain Fire. Authorities identified the pilot as 56-year-old Nicholas Dale of Sooke, British Columbia. He was the only person on board the helicopter when it went down in Silver Jack Reservoir on Sunday. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the crash, while the Federal Aviation Administration says the aircraft overturned after crashing under unknown circumstances. The Gold Mountain Fire has burned more than 57 square miles in southwestern Colorado and was 11% contained as firefighters continued working to contain the blaze.

Florida Set To Execute Oldest Death Row Inmate

Florida is preparing to execute 74-year-old Dennis Sochor, who would become the oldest death row inmate put to death in the state's history. Sochor was convicted of the 1982 kidnapping and murder of 18-year-old Patricia Gifford after the two met at a New Year's Eve party. He was sentenced to death in 1987 after confessing to the killing. If the execution moves forward as scheduled, it will be Florida's 10th execution of the year, more than any other state. An appeal remains pending before the U.S. Supreme Court. Later this month, Florida is also scheduled to execute an 80-year-old inmate, who would become the state's first octogenarian to be put to death.

States Sue To Block Paramount-Warner Merger

A coalition of 12 states has filed a lawsuit seeking to block Paramount's proposed $81 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, arguing the deal would harm competition in the entertainment industry. The lawsuit, led by California's attorney general, contends the merger would result in higher prices, fewer choices and less content for consumers while giving the combined company greater control over Hollywood. Paramount disputes those claims, saying the merger would strengthen competition and benefit consumers. The company says it intends to vigorously defend the transaction in court as the legal challenge moves forward.

Supreme Court Justices Seek More Security Funding

Supreme Court Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett are making a rare appearance before Congress to request additional funding for security amid rising threats against the federal judiciary. The Supreme Court is seeking $228 million for the next fiscal year, including nearly $15 million to expand personal protection for the justices. The request comes after a series of threats targeting judges nationwide, including a false swatting call to Justice Barrett's home earlier this year. Tuesday's hearing marks the first time Supreme Court justices have testified before Congress since 2019.

ICE Says Officer Fired While Fearing For Public Safety

Federal officials say an ICE officer fatally shot a driver in Maine after the vehicle allegedly tried to flee while agents were executing an arrest warrant. The Department of Homeland Security said the officer opened fire because he feared for public safety as the vehicle attempted to leave the scene. Sen. Angus King said the man who was killed was not the target of the warrant being served, citing information he received from Homeland Security Secretary Mark Mullin. Immigrant rights advocates identified the man as a 26-year-old native of Colombia. The shooting remains under investigation and marks one of several recent incidents in which ICE agents have used deadly force during immigration enforcement operations.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone to temporarily fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the death of her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham. The vacancy has drawn interest from several South Carolina Republicans seeking to succeed the longtime senator.

Judge Rebukes Trump IRS Lawsuit

A federal judge has sharply criticized President Donald Trump's lawsuit over the leak of his tax returns, ruling that the case was filed for an "improper purpose." U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams referred one of Trump's attorneys for possible disciplinary action, describing the lawsuit as an exercise in self-dealing because it targeted a federal agency under the president's own administration. The lawsuit ended in May with a settlement that created a $1.776 billion compensation fund for Trump allies and granted immunity from IRS audits. The fund was later abandoned. The judge's ruling does not reopen the case but raises questions about the conduct of the attorneys who filed it.

New York Times Reporters Subpoenaed In Air Force One Leak Probe

Five New York Times journalists have been subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury over their reporting on security concerns involving the new Air Force One. The subpoenas are tied to an investigation into how information about the aircraft’s security reached the newspaper. The reporters have been ordered to appear before the grand jury this week. Press freedom groups, including the National Press Club and the Committee to Protect Journalists, have criticized the move as a serious threat to journalism and the protection of confidential sources. The New York Times says it plans to challenge the subpoenas and is confident it will prevail in court.

U.S., Iran Trade New Strikes As Conflict Escalates

The United States and Iran exchanged a new round of military strikes Tuesday, further escalating tensions and raising fears that the conflict could spiral into a broader regional war. The latest fighting came hours after President Donald Trump accused Iran of violating its agreement with the United States. Trump announced plans to reinstate a blockade targeting Iranian shipping and proposed a 20% fee on cargo moving through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical energy corridors. U.S. forces launched a third consecutive night of strikes on Iranian targets, while Iran responded with attacks targeting U.S. allies across the Middle East. The renewed hostilities have effectively derailed an interim agreement that had been intended to pause the fighting, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and allow time for negotiations toward a permanent peace deal. The escalating conflict has renewed concerns about global energy supplies, pushed oil prices higher and increased fears of a wider war if diplomatic efforts fail.
