Texas’ House of Representatives is approving a new map that creates up to five new, winnable congressional seats for the GOP. The map passed Wednesday after a push by President Donald Trump for Republican-controlled states to redraw their legislative maps to give his party a better chance of holding onto control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the midterm elections. The maps must be approved by Texas’ Republican-controlled Senate and Gov. Greg Abbott before they become official. The new maps are likely to trigger revised maps in California to create new Democratic-leaning seats later this week. Those would need to be approved by voters before becoming official.

Top Justice Department officials were perplexed by the extensive pardons former President Biden granted to thousands of convicts just before exiting office earlier this year, and they criticized the White House for inaccurately describing the clemency recipients as “nonviolent” offenders.
An appeals court has thrown out the massive civil fraud penalty against President Donald Trump but upheld other punishments, such as banning Trump and his two eldest sons from serving in corporate leadership for a few years. A five-judge panel ruled Thursday in New York state’s lawsuit accusing the businessman-turned-politician of exaggerating his wealth. The decision came seven months after the Republican returned to the White House. The decision in New York’s mid-level Appellate Division altered a verdict that stood to cost Trump more than $515 million and rock his real estate empire. Trump denies wrongdoing and says the case and the verdict were political moves by Democrats. The New York attorney general's office hadn't commented.

The Ukrainian Air Force says Russia has launched a major aerial attack on Ukraine, firing 574 drones and 40 missiles. The attack has targeted western regions, killing at least one person and injuring 15 others. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister says a major U.S. electronics manufacturer was hit. This marks Russia's third-largest aerial attack this year by drone count. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned the attack, urging stronger international pressure on Moscow. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy plans to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin that potentially could involve U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss security guarantees and peace efforts.
The Office of National Intelligence says it will dramatically reduce its workforce and cut its budget by more than $700 million annually. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard says the office "has become bloated and inefficient, and the intelligence community is rife with abuse of power, unauthorized leaks of classified intelligence, and politicized weaponization of intelligence.” She says the intelligence community “must make serious changes to fulfill its responsibility to the American people and the U.S. Constitution by focusing on our core mission: find the truth and provide objective, unbiased, timely intelligence to the President and policymakers.”
