When we give up our neediness for other people, God gives us the ability to truly love them in return. All of the thought and effort we previously spent in trying to get love “from” them is strangely transformed into thought and effort in trying to get love “to” them.<br />In the same way, when we give up our need to relentlessly pursue things for our own benefit, He gives us the ability to relentlessly pursue things for the benefit of others. All of the thought and effort we previously spent in trying to extract material blessings from them is strangely transformed into thought and effort in trying to get material blessings to them.<br />This kind of faith is not blind.<br />

I have spent my entire life teaching and training people to think things through, so that the unintended consequences of any action just don't happen, or are minimal at worst. Nobody likes to deal with unintended consequences. But that's what we're going to deal with if we aren't prudent. In other words, “If we just let things happen, most of them will be bad.”<br />So how do our insurance policies, emergency funds, retirement accounts, doctors, lawyers, financial planners—our trunk full of contingency plans—how do they fit with faith in God?<br />

Just in Case?

In our culture here in the United States, we enter into relationships with our brain set on silent, and we exit relationships at the first sign of trouble. It is in this environment of such low expectations of ourselves and of others that we try to have high expectations of God. It is in this environment that we try to have faith in God. <br />It is with a mind full of human failures that we try to understand faith in God. And so we contaminate our expectations of God with our human experience.<br />But God doesn't operate with any of our human weaknesses.<br />

Exit Strategy?

We don't get into God's presence by thinking and praying, or wishing and hoping. We get into the presence of God by responding to the conviction that God exists, and by responding to the conviction that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him because they refuse to live apart from His presence. Faith, however, is not self‐generated. Faith is Christ‐generated. We do not have to get our faith from some outside source. Jesus has already authored and distributed His faith to each of us.<br />And we do not have to blindly attempt to use this faith. Jesus stands ready to sustain and perfect our faith—to the extent we will let Him.<br />
